The WMS standard facilitates the integration of geo-referenced images into web applications.
The Géoclip Server application, in particular France Découverte, began integrating this norm starting in January 2009.
WMS (Web Map Service) lets us produce maps that pull together cartography images from various servers. WMS is an international standard defined by the OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium). A WMS request lets us obtain images in the jpg or png format supplied by a WMS server. These images are extracted from geographical layers depending on the size and expanse desired. Such images can be displayed in a client WMS application.
An Géoclip Server application such as France Découverte is both a WMS client and server.

For example I display a layer from the Open Street Map server within France Découverte:

For instance I display a layer from France Découverte within uDig:
Here is a live experiment of the display of layers from France Découverte within OpenLayers:
The + button, in the upper right corner, lets us choose among several layers.
Loading layers from France découverte into another WMS client application is possible using the following address : http://france.geoclip.fr/GC_wms.php.
